Open for Business!
December 2004

Dear Friend, Family, Colleagues, and Friends of...

Warm greetings to each of you. My reason for writing is to proudly announce the birth of my business!

First, a bit of relevant background information. It was mid- August when I was informed that on September 14th I would be laid off from my job at Brown University. While initially concerned about the impact of this impending change, I quickly saw an opportunity come into focus. September brought changes, indeed! On September 1st alone: 1. My dear Kim (who I had seen daily for the past 3 years) left for her long awaited move to California. 2. My upstairs tenants/friends lease ended and they also moved out of state. 3. New tenants, known only from a brief meeting and their rental applications, moved in. And, 4. I started a new class. Whew! That was just on September first!

So, with a gaping hole in my personal life, new faces and unfamiliar energy in my home, and a blow to my financial stability, the first few weeks of September 2004 were challenging, at best. But regardless, I felt surprisingly invigorated (that is, with the exception of one jam-packed weekend of heartily indulged self-pity - no doubt, part of the process).

Once I made the conscious decision to take the "empty" out of empty space, what I discovered instead was "room."

(My reason for sharing all of this will become clear momentarily.) So, with no shortage of free time, I got to thinking about transition: the struggle of it, the power of it, and the tremendous opportunity of it. It became glaringly clear to me that transition ALWAYS brings opportunity - without fail! What we decide to do (or not do) with it? Well, that's the clincher. What also became apparent to me was that, in my heart of hearts, just beneath the struggle of it, the truth is: I love transition! Maybe some of you can relate? I love discovering what lies just beyond my fears. I love the eventual payoff of a more integrated self. And, most of all, I realized that I am truly passionate about witnessing this process in others! I feel compelled to bring as much objectivity as I can offer to others in the midst of such a life transition, all while creating a broader vision of possibilities that can, at times, be blinded by fear. I love encouraging others, instilling motivation, giving support, and presenting the challenge to dig deeper. I love asking questions whose answers surprise. I love witnessing an immobilizing fear transform into a source of inspiration! I love the humanity of it! I love being part of this creative collaboration!

So, having found a primary, authentic passion I asked myself, "Self, can I make a living doing what I'm passionate about?" And, what do you know? The answer is yes! It was by honoring this passion that I was able to not only realize my goal of self- employment, but do so in a way that aligns beautifully with my core...

It's an experience I wish for everyone on this planet to have firsthand. I wish it for the planet as much as I wish it for the individual.

Hence, Transition Coaching & Event Planning, LLC was born. My business is threefold:

1. I am a personal and professional Life Coach. As a small business owner, I especially enjoy working with other small business owners, or aspiring small business owners. Of course, I am not limited to this clientele only! It is my work and my passion to assist others as they design and create the life that they want. That may include creating more free time, financial independence, enhanced relationships, clarifying a new direction, or designing ways to lead a more balanced, healthy lifestyle.

2. I am an event planner and facilitator for Blessingway ceremonies. A Blessingway is a Navajo tradition that honors and celebrates a woman's rite of passage into motherhood. The ceremony is a beautiful addition to or substitution for the modern day baby shower.

3. I am a group facilitator. I lead groups in a board game called "The Transformation Game®." Participating in this workshop is a fun, supportive, affordable way to progress through the stages of making positive changes in one's life.
