Can I tell you a story?

(Ahem.)
Once upon a time, I wrote a book. I was inspired to write this book thanks to my brilliant clients. You see, I began to notice an uncanny theme in our conversations. I noticed that my clients were using words like "baby" "conception" "expecting" "nesting" "stretching limits" "birthing" "labor"...and even "cutting the cord"...all in reference to the process of bringing their dreams to life!
It struck me as rather odd at first...
That is, until I understood the wisdom of the pregnancy metaphor. Herein lies a timeless, intuitive, universal, natural process - one that, I realized, can support us in birthing just about anything! And so, I begin writing, and the words were practically falling out and onto the page. A week or so later, I was on the phone with my mom one afternoon, and mentioned that I had started writing a book.
Now, I kid you not... I had told her NOTHING about the book itself, the topic, the theme, nothing. And, do you know what she said? This is what she said: First, she literally gasped with excitement, and then she said, with sincere over-the-top exuberance, "How far along are you?!?"
Can you believe THAT?
I laughed out loud, and then proceeded to do my best to explain what was so funny. You can be sure that, in that moment, I let go of any lingering doubt that I was on the right track! AND, the uncanny synergies continued... While signing a book for someone at the book release party, I was asked how long it took to write my book. It was a question I hadn't answered before or given any thought to - and while you might expect I'd have caught on by then - I was stunned when I realized that this 'baby' took me 9 months!
Oh yes... it was an inspired journey, for sure. BUT, I didn't write it for me!
I wrote it for YOU!
And, frankly, with all the excitement brewing about the 5th annual Rhode Island Dream Party® coming up on October 8, and the Dreaming Out Loud workshop & networking event happening on August 10 (details on this below), being mid-way through facilitating a summer Dream Circle, the new & improved Dream Circle 2.0 program design underway, and several other deliciously dreamy projects in the pipeline...my book hasn't been getting the love and attention it deserves, until now.

Let me explain...
As a Dream Realization coach, I know the beauty of dreaming and what it takes to make those dreams come true, but this certainly wasn't always the case.
I assure you...I know what it means to thirst, to feel stuck, overwhelmed, creatively stifled, and constrained by circumstances. Yet, I also know what it means to, in the midst of it all, harbor a deep knowing that life is to be enjoyed fully. Even during the most trying times, I've known in my heart-of-hearts that given the right tools, I could juice up a tall glass of lemonade from that pile of lemons that I kept tripping on!
And so, I set out to create a deliciously juicy life. I was ready to do whatever it took, not because I was especially brave but because I simply couldn't imagine that the journey to fulfilling those dreams could be any harder than staying put! Relate?

10 Driving Tips on the Road to Your Dreams
Where are you going?
I often rave about my GPS, a cherished "gift that keeps on giving". Not only do I love it because of the ease and confidence it offers me in finding my way, but this fabulous little computer also calculates my anticipated time of arrival. I just love that... Short of something catastrophic or a massive detour, I breathe easier knowing when and where I'll arrive at my destination.
But wait, there's more!
In the event of a missed turn, Jill (yes, that's her name) echos the word "recalculating" while identifying an alternate route that will take me to my destination. No judgment or panic, simply: recalculating. Ahhh...anyone who's ridden in my car with me knows first-hand, that I have great affection for my GPS.
On the road to realizing your dreams, there is much to be learned from this nifty little invention.
10 DRIVING TIPS ON THE ROAD TO YOUR DREAMS:
1. Unless you know your destination, a GPS will not be much use to you. You must choose a destination! This is not to say you can't change direction at any time, it just means that in order to receive guidance about where to go, you must begin by choosing which way to head. (By the way, there is of course not a thing wrong with a joy-ride, as long as you don't feel any particular urgency to get anywhere in particular.)
2. When would you like to arrive? Are you traveling, by foot, bike, car...? Take into account how fast you're able to travel for a steady distance, and when you would like to arrive. With a bit of planning, you'll be able to easily assess how soon to set out on your journey and what to pack.
3. Give yourself some extra time so you can stop along the way to refuel.
4. Remember: You are in the drivers seat.
5. Enjoy the ride. Half the fun is getting there.
6. If it feels daunting to go it alone, find others who are heading in a similar direction to join you. (See below for more info on this!)
7. Pace yourself.
8. Glance in the rear-view mirror periodically, but keep your primary focus on what's in front of you.
9. Celebrate each milestone along the way, knowing that every step counts.
10. Don't doubt and question whether or not you'll get there! Just keep going...

Planned Coincidences on the Journey From Employment to Entrepreneurship
I was so honored to be a guest panelist at the Emerging Women in Business Conference last week at the University of Rhode Island. The panel topic was Employment to Entrepreneurship: Focus on Your Courage, Not Your Fears.
For those of you who missed it, I shared how some "planned coincidences" helped me make the transition from a job I did not enjoy to a business owner, doing work I am truly passionate about. So as a special offering for those of you with entrepreneurial dreams, I hope these tips will support and inspire you:
* While still at the job I disliked, I began living into my desired future. What I mean by this is... I shifted my attention away from all of what I did not like about my situation, and began taking action that aligned with what I desired.
* A question to consider: "If you knew for certain that in 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years, that your entrepreneurial dream was going to happen, what would you be doing right now to prepare?"
Some of my "planned coincidences" included:
* I anticipated and saw the opportunity of potential lay-off.
* I made intentional efforts to bring my expenses way down as an act of self-care. This minimized stress about having to make money immediately.
* While still at my job, I took coach training courses at night and I began coaching several pro-bono clients to gain experience and referrals.
Did you know? I recently learned that the Latin root of the word "vocation" is "voc" which means "to call". So, a vocation is a calling! Be sure that the path you choose lights you up inside.
And, last but not least, as long as you embark on new experiences and challenge yourself to realize your potential, fear is inevitable. So, rather than trying to eliminate fear, focus on increasing your courage, and be sure to surround yourself with people who believe in you.

Fear: Get Used to It?
Fear: "Get used to it"
Last weekend, I led a retreat for a group of women who invited me to Maine. When I arrived, I unpacked my car eagerly, excited about what was to come. I knew my material was strong and I was confident in my abilities to facilitate the group.
On Friday we had a potluck dinner, during which it hit me - unlike past retreats I've led, I didn't know any of these women and they didn't know me. Michelle (whose letter is posted below) had been referred to my website, and invited her friends to join in the weekend. It was trust in Michelle - not me - that brought them there. Gulp.
Sleep eluded me as I turned the Saturday program over and over in my mind. After an early morning rewrite, I opened on Saturday morning by sharing the fear I had faced during the night, as well as some of my personal story (it hasn't always been dreamy, I assure you). Sleep-deprived, humbled, and with fear as my companion, I felt relief as a sense of trust and connection grew in support of what proved to be a phenomenally powerful weekend.
One woman, who had been an actor in New York, shared that she had asked her acting coach what to do about the fear she felt every time she got on stage. His answer was, "Get used to it." How's that for concise?
Fear can be minimized, but it won't disappear entirely. To be bigger than your fear, its presence must be integrated. Expected. Ideally, even welcomed.
There are many who advocate the elimination of fear, but it's important to remember that brave people are not without fear. If they were, what in the world would they need bravery for?!?
Brave people are those who have learned to work with fear. Rather than spend your energy in an attempt to abolish fear, what if you "got used to it" instead?
Fear exists. Maybe it's not an evil culprit that's holding your dreams hostage after all. Maybe fear doesn't need to be eliminated in order to do what you want. Invite bravery to join your fear, and possibilities will abound!
I know that bravery has played a huge role in my own breakthroughs. Now, I am eager and actively seeking the next opportunity to lead a "Birth Your Dreams" retreat to another group that I meet upon arrival. Will it be for you and your circle of friends?

Tara's Soapbox about Big Steps & Small Steps
As you take your next steps toward the life of your dreams, here's something to consider...
Is your next step a big step or a small step? It's easy to get excited about your next step and make assessments about how BIG a step it will be for you. While I understand the tendency, my advice is not to get worked up about whether or not your next step will be big or small in the course of your journey forward.
Sometimes what you think will be a great big step turns out to be rather uneventful, while what seems small or even sometime unrelated entirely to your dream, turns out to reap rewards you never could have imagined. So, rather than work yourself up into a lather with anticipation, I invite you to simply take a deep breath, and take your next inspired action now, trusting the process and that each step will point you closer and closer in the direction of what you desire.
